Program Background
Program Background
Such a condition was obvious from the early development in the tourism industry in Indonesia, that was initialized by the appearance of a number of hotels as well as other services industries, being an evidence of the determination of the Indonesian nation to develop the tourism sector as one of the Nation’s foreign exchange income sources. In the initial stages of its development, the workforce in this industry was individuals from the general public with different backgrounds in education and vocational capabilities. Even during those days, a large number of workers in this industry were members of the population who only had a primary or secondary educational background, as long as they possessed the will and were prepared to work in this industry. Their numbers were abundant.
The educational opportunities that they utilized were usually obtained through various non-formal educational programs, such as trainings, workshops, seminars, etc. Although some of them pursued formal education such as entering tertiary educational institutions in order to improve their competence and expertise, generally pressed by the demand of their occupation as they already held a position as leader, at the supervisory level, manager or even top-level. However, there were many of them who had not the chance of attending a formal education, although if viewed from the angle of work experience that they went through, they actually already possessed a competence that could be regarded on one line as those who graduated from a tertiary educational level institution. The problem they encountered was, that they did not possess a diploma that could serve as an authentic evidence as provided by a tertiary educational institution of their qualifications.
As such was also encountered by part of the students who attended formal education at the Trisakti Institute of Tourism (STP Trisakti), which formerly was known as the Trisakti Tourism Academy (APT). Through the history of the STP Trisakti as a tertiary educational institution that provided education to candidates of the workforce of the tourism industry. A fact was that a number of students were not able to continue and accomplish their study caused by various reasons, such as being recruited to work in a company and could not arrange for spare time to study while working. The number of these students falling into such a case, if accumulated through the 40 years the STP Trisakti has been established, is quite great. Presently they are holding managerial as well as top positions, and they feel that it is the time for them dig more into the knowledge and improve their intellectual quality through attending a formal education.
Taking into account the two conditions above, the Trisakti Institute of Tourism responded to cater for this issue, by opening a new program which was given the name of “The Trisakti Institute of Tourism Executive Program”
